Shopping in New Brunswick

Sunday shopping is legal in New Brunswick; generally stores are open from 12pm Midday - 5pm.

The main difference you will notice with shopping in New Brunswick is that HST (similar to VAT) is applied to most goods and services. HST is charged at 13% and will not be on the ticket price in a shop (the exception is alcohol and Petrol). Food generally works out at roughly 4% as tax is dependent on processing a packaging.

Canadians use both Credit Cards and Debit cards, although Debit cards are not taken over the phone. The chip and PIN system, although universal in Europe is only just starting to be used in New Brunswick. Supermarket cashiers will automatically pack your goods for you.
